Sadly, we will not be holding the Mersea Seafood Festival this year as hoped.

If you would be interested in helping us run this popular event please telephone West Mersea Town Council on 01206 382128.

The Mersea Seafood Festival celebrates the maritime heritage of Mersea Island with a series of events centred on the waterfront in the ancient 'City' of Mersea.

Planned to coincide with the beginning of the oyster season, the festival is an opportunity for residents and visitors to learn more of the fascinating history of this fishing community, see ancient crafts being demonstrated, and sample the famous Colchester Oysters and locally produced wines.

Saturday 10th September 2005

On the Saturday there was a rare opportunity to take a boat out to Packing Shed Island where visitors could have a cuppa and admire the exhibits. Whilst on shore there were many presentations and activities to interest adults and children.

  • Seafood cookery demonstrations and tastings
  • Fresh fish and oyster sales
  • Traditional storytelling
  • Face painting and badge making
  • Quizzes and competitions
  • Historical and marine craft exhibits
  • Traditional boat races
  • Live music

Sunday 11th September 2005

On the Sunday visitors watched the Mersea Oyster Dredging Match performed by a fleet of traditional wooden boats under sail.

This was followed by the weigh-in and prize-giving, with the judging carried out by a Celebrity Chef.
